Non-succulents

I also have a few non-succulents in my plant collection, some of which I have had for several decades, and other which I have only acquired recently.

I have had this plant since I was a child. I was given a cutting by a friend of the family, and have grown it for years, cutting it down and propagating it from the pieces several times once it gets too large. I have been fortunate enough to have it flower for me several times.

Saintpaulia ionantha

I have two African violets - one which I picked up from Canadian Tire shortly after moving to Vancouver, and a second given to me by my mother when she and my father moved to Australia.

Strelitzia reginae

Bird of Paradise flower

Strelitzia reginae - Bird of Paradise, March 2016

This is the smaller of my two bird of paradise plants. I have had only three of twenty seeds purchased from rareexoticseeds.com germinate, two of which have survived to produce leaves. I bought these as birds of paradise are one of my favourite flowers. I doubt I'll get to see these flower anytime soon, as it apparently can take 4 to 7 years before seed grown plants flower for the first time.

Quercus rubra

I grew these two red oak seedlings from acorns picked up from the trees that grow along Main Mall on the UBC campus. Neither has done much after growing the first four leaves in early February 2015. They lost their leaves in the fall, and have remained dormant all winter. Hopefully they will resume growth sometime in March/April when the rest of the oaks on Campus start leafing out again.
